Boost Your PR in Minutes
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
It’s a very simple one that you can accomplish without spending a single dime. Or you can automate it to massive levels for a couple of dollars.
In a nutshell, what we’re going to do is host a free “software download” on our site and submit that piece of freeware to a couple hundred software directories. Most of these will obligingly link back to our page with a nice followable link.
The more finicky SEOs will complain that the links aren’t perfectly relevant and they’ll be right, but only slightly.
Here is an oft used phrase in SEO: “a rising tide lifts all the ships”. It was coined by JFK to say that a good economic climate is favorable to every citizen.
The same is true in SEO. While I would prefer to get perfect anchor text links from extremely relevant sites, I will certainly not frown on getting hundreds of somewhat off topic links from strong, high PR directories.
That’s what we’ll do here. You can get enough link juice to give a new page up to PR4 and a pretty much guaranteed PR3 on a totally new site.
Here’s now it works:
1) Grab or create a piece of software which you can legally offer for free download on your site. This can be anything from a sitemap generator you have coded for you or even a screen saver you repackage. The quality is not important here, the point is to have something to submit.
2) Create a PAD file for your software. A PAD file is simply the data format you need to submit your software in so that the directories can complete the forms automatically. http://www.topshareware.com/PAD-Creator-download-4345.htm You can download one here that also includes a list of software directories to submit to. It’s Free…
3) Upload the software to your site with a .exe or .zip extension.
4) Either use your home page as the “developer site” or a nice page with a link to where they can download the software from your site. You can even choose anchor text that will be used to link through to this page…
5) Quickly create an info page about your download. A very brief description of what your software does will do fine. This is a second page who’s PR you will be boosting from which you will be able to pass link juice to your pages. here’s the one I made:XML sitemap
6) Submit your software to hundreds of directories. If you’re doing this manually, it will take a long time but you can still get good results by choosing the highest PR directories. If you prefer to automate it as I have, use Promosoft from www.develab.net .
7) Sit back as links are added to your page.
8) Use the “developer” page, which now has strong PR to pass specific anchor text links to your site’s important content and homepage.
And there it is. If you use the software, it virtually takes minutes to accomplish. You can do it again and again if you have a large number of sites or even for your blog farms, if you swing that way.
P.S. You can download the excellent XML sitemap generator here. It’s free.

If you have any problems to create XML sitemap files for your sites or to notify search engines about updated sitemap files, try Sitemap Writer Pro. It is a powerfull tool that helps you to create and keep up-to-date sitemaps for your websites.
Sitemap Writer Pro has new tools - FTP manager for uploading sitemaps, search engine notification tool (now supports Ask.com and MSN.com), site crawler for adding an URLs into the sitemap and Yahoo Index viewer.

Cool info Alex….
Is this how the “guru slayer” spammy sites got indexed so quickly back during that promo?

Oh, just noticed, the Promosoft tool was on Develab.net, not the .com.

Hey Rian,
Yeah, that would be the same tactic. It has more potential than I initially thought.
And thanks for the typo, fixing it…

Hi Alex,
thanks for the great tip.
I just wanted to download the PAD Creator to test it but it seems that the exe file isn’t available any longer and all software achieves redirect to the same download URL
Do you know a way how to get the exe file from somewhere else? I already googled some time but with no success.
Thanks.

this idea is not original, it was published in bluehatseo.com

Oops,
And I probably read it there a year or so ago, yet I had no recollection of it.
Thankfully I have Bluehat on my blogroll so I’m pretty sure Eli will forgive me.

One great way I’ve found to get tons of backlinks and increase my PR is to make WordPress themes available for free download. It’s a little work to submit them to various galleries, but one of them got on wordpress.com for people’s free blogs. None of the links are highly relevant, but I have a PR of 6.

Hi Michael,
Link relevance is overrated in my opinion. I’d take a link from Wordpress anyday. Thanks for the tip, it’s a good one.

Cool idea. Any comments about free software submission option offered through the free PAD-Creator program?

I Joshua,
I can’t really comment on it because I haven’t used it myself but from what I read and heard, it is very limited compared with what the paid versions can do.
Thanks for your comment.
