Affiliate Project X Experiment Part 3: Writing the Pre-Sell
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
So if you’ve been following my little adventures, you know that I’ve challenged myself to sell Affiliate Project X and make it work.
To do so, I had to create a bonus that would be offered to people who bought Affiliate Project X through my link.
I went way overboard and built 2 pre-sell templates as well as a squeeze page template. And a guide that explains the whole process. Yes, it’s nearly a product in itself…
These are plug and play templates where all the text and layout effects already exist. All one has to do it fill in the blanks and change some sentences around here and there.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Writing the Pre-Sell is the hard part.
When you set up a new campaign, product research is your first concern, bonus creation is one of the main issues and keyword research as well as ad copy all play a big part in the equation.
To me the simple truth is that with minimal training, anyone, and I really mean anyone can complete all the steps of the process with a high degree of efficiency. Where they will hit a brick wall is the pre-sell.
I personally had tons of trouble with this. It’s very tempting to do it all wrong. You need to have the right psychological perspective and you need some presentation skills.
A good pre-sell for your affiliate campaign makes the difference between a 1% conversion rate and a 9% conversion rate. And that in turn is the difference between miserable failure and astounding success.
Here’s a quick number crunch.
Say I’m paying $1 a click to buy traffic from Adwords for my Affiliate Project X landing page. All other things being equal, the conversion rate of my landing page will determine the profits or losses I accumulate.
Affiliate Project X pays 44$ of commission for every sale. At 1% conversion from $1 clicks, I lose 66$ for every $100 I spend. I think you will agree I won’t be playing that game for long.
At 2% conversion, I’m only losing $12 for every 100$ I spend on PPC. Not a disaster but still not worth my time.
At 3% conversions, I’m in the green. For every $100 in ads I buy, I make back my investment and turn a profit of $32. At 4%, my profit is $76. 5 % and my profit is $120 way up until I hit 9%. Then my profit for every $100 invested is $296.
Anything above 100% ROI is acceptable although there is no reason to settle for such low figures. Presently, one of my campaigns is bordering 1100% ROI.
And I owe all this to the efficient pre-sell. Small differences in sales copy make a very big difference on my bottom line…
Which brings me back to my Affiliate Project X Experiment.
The bonus I created is called Pre-Sells and Squeezes.
Exactly the part I found difficult and the piece of the puzzle that represents the biggest challenge for the average affiliate marketer.
I spent more time on this than I should have but it was worth it in the end because I not only produced a high value bonus for my future customers, I also documented my own process to a degree I never would have otherwise.
I was still writing pre-sells on a case by case basis. Re-testing every time, wracking my brain for inspiration.
Not anymore. With the templates I was able to create, I have a foolproof recipe. And I’m very happy with it.
Unlike most of these products where the creator makes you believe it’s the best thing to happen since sliced bread but doesn’t even use their product, I went ahead and used “template #2” to write the Affiliate Project X review (pre-sell) that will be getting my PPC traffic.
You can read it here. This was written using exactly the templates I created for the bonus.
I have more travel on the old agenda so I won’t put up the campaign until Saturday the 23rd. Once I do, I will be testing and tweaking the page and ads.
Count on me to document the whole process here so you can laugh at my mistakes and hopefully celebrate with me when I get it right.

Hi Alex, I currently have a 17-35% conversion rate on the only adwords campaign I’m running.
I’m still very new to the game, and that conversion is only to a lead, not a sale.
The numbers your referring to, are those for sales? I’d love to discover those “profit pockets” of 1100% ROI - without breaking the bank to learn how =D
You seem quite knowledgable… You were also recommended from a friend (Jad)

Hi Dane,
Welcome to NetFm. Jad’s a good friend of mine too.
The figures I’m stating are for sales. I also convert to leads but then forward directly to a sales page and this allows me to immediately monetize the traffic I pay for.
You can hit me up by email or directly on the blog if you want to chat.
Cheers,
Alex
